Perhaps Bears is the audio-story from the point of view of a character who has just returned from a wonderful hike in the wilderness. She tells of the intensity of being in the wild alone at night. Any rustle or twig snap tugs at your ear-

"What was that?!"
"Was that a bear?!"
".....perhaps"

The piece has a duration of 6:40 and is written for processed spoken word, live french horn, synthesizer, and two types of looping- automated looping and midi-triggered looping. Both looping styles are used in tandem to create the anxiety filled adventure that is accented with looped microphone taps, and dissonant generated audio.

The piece opens with a joyous realization of the end of an adventure that turns sour as the setting sun reveals the obscurity of darkness. The character struggles to rationalize her fear of
the unknown. She sings a lullaby to herself in an attempt to calm herself to sleep, but fails as the tune twists and morphs into a form that creates more fear than it could ever resolve.

Tension turns to panic, breaking down into a groove that provides the basis to throw the character into turmoil and sweeping her into more despair. With effort, she realizes that one can trust in the forest, who has cared for her creatures for thousands of years and will continue
long after we are gone. Previous themes of anxiety morph once again, but this time to link up with the other themes of the forest, and a realization is had- maybe one can be here safely.

Perhaps Bears was written by Brian KM with lyrics as a collaboration with Claudia Minor Troyer, who performed the voice acting for the piece.
